Drastically Improve Your Pinterest Profile in Just Three Easy Steps
Pinterest is a gold mine of information for running your small business/side hustle, but have you considered how you can make it a gold mine of new traffic for your website or shop? If you can think of Pinterest more like a search engine than like a social media platform, you’ll begin to understand how beneficial it is to establish your brand on a site like Pinterest.
Pinterest works just the same as Google in that it reads pins and descriptions to find keywords which let it know what pins to return for any given query. The more relevant the pin, the higher it will rank in the search results. You get your pins shown in search results when you have accurate and purposeful descriptions for your pins that utilize highly-trafficked keywords. Developing a Pinterest strategy to grow your online presence doesn’t have to be a big ordeal. In fact, today I wanted to share a few ways you can improve your Pinterest profile right now, with minimal experience in online or social media marketing, and without taking a ton of time. This is perfect for you side hustlin’ mamas with less time on your hands, trying to make as big of an impact in your online presence as if you were working full-time with no other commitments.
As time goes on, you’ll have more opportunities to do more and more on Pinterest. While it’s a highly productive way to grow your business or blog, and it’s definitely worth any amount of time you can put in it sooner rather than later, don’t feel pressured to jump right in whole hog, doing all the things, with a big, intensive strategy. Try these simple tweaks that should take less than an hour or so to get set-up, and watch your monthly viewership and Pinterest follower count grow.
step one: update your profile description
A good profile description includes a brief summary of who you serve and what you provide, as well as a call-to-action to get the viewer to do something. You may want them to sign up for your mailing list, or head over to your website to grab a freebie. It’s a good idea to provide them with some incentive to visit your website or follow your Pinterest profile. People love seeing the value upfront.
Think back on your purpose for your business. Who do you want to help with your products or services? How exactly would you describe your offerings? Consider the following template when you’re writing your profile description:

step two: cater your boards to your audience
For the longest time, Pinterest was viewed as a social platform. The goal for most users was to connect with other users and see what kinds of things they were finding to pin. As I mentioned before, the site has shifted towards more of a search engine feel where, if you want to be successful as a brand, you should be providing searchers with quality information that they see as valuable. The shift in mindset as a user means there needs to be a shift in mindset as businesses start to cater their profiles to potential audiences.
Instead of housing a ton of boards pertaining to your personal interests and goals, revamp your profile to have content that relates to your audience. For example, for me, that shift meant removing my party planning board for my boys’ third birthday party and turning it into a board full of productivity tips. I swapped my dream home board with lots of living room and kitchen decor inspiration for a board full of times for keeping a purposeful, efficient home. I added a whole slew of new boards and marked most of mine as hidden, if I wasn’t ready to remove them completely. The point is that when a potential customer lands on my profile, I want them to see the information presented to them that they’re most in need of. They don’t care what recipes I want to try someday: they want to see what tips I’d share for making the most of nap-time to improve your business.
step three: utilize automatic pinning software like Tailwind
If you’re ready to take the next step and start growing your traffic through PInterest, then you need to be smart about what you pin and when. Thankfully, I’ve started using Tailwind to grow my PInterest account and I full attribute any and all success I’ve had to the Tailwind platform.
My process for Pinterest involves pinning my favorite posts I’ve seen throughout the month to a secret board on Pinterest, and then one day a month, at the end of the month, I’ll pull up my Tailwind app in a second browser and pin all the content from my site and that I’ve saved in my secret board to my Tailwind feed, to be sent out at the optimal times throughout the coming month. Tailwind syncs to my account and is able to determine automatically all the best times to pin to get my pins in front of as many followers as possible.
I love how easy to use Tailwind is, and how streamlined and efficient it makes my Pinterest strategy. It takes me about two hours a month to schedule out about 25 pins a day, and as I get more and more time to invest, I’ll schedule and send out more pins to get even more exposure.
